Starr Elementary was recognized by the Indiana Department of Education last year as a Promising Practice school for its use of data, so other RCS schools will follow Starr's lead. Schools will increase their use of data to assess student learning throughout the year.

"We've let the professionals decide how to get there," he said. Terrill said teachers spent last year preparing for the 8 Step Process. It's a framework for schools to look at data and use that data to drive instruction in schools, said Assistant Superintendent Chuck Reynolds. In addition, RCS is rolling out a common continuous school improvement process called The 8 Step Process. Other incentives need funding such as prizes, ice cream and end-of-the-year field trips. Crucial financial support for that program comes from the Stamm Koechlein Family Foundation, which serves the Richmond area.Īll of the buildings currently use PBIS, but Test and Vaile are ramping up their involvement.

Many of the incentives are free or low-cost, such as a 10-minute recess, a chance to play games or eat lunch with a teacher. RCS wants to re-emphasize core values on how to be good citizens in school, online and in the community, said Corey Hartley, director of elementary education. Those include a review of the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to focus on good behavior instead of just dealing with discipline issues. RCS administrators have made several plans for the new year. Richmond High School has two new assistant principals in Josh Amyx and Stephanie Baker. Kirsten Phillips is the new principal at Charles Elementary Rachel Etherington is leading Community Youth Services and Dennis Intermediate welcomes new assistant principal Dawn Claghorn. The district is welcoming about 30 new teachers this fall. However, students will see some new faces. Now that RCS administrators have settled into their roles, there are opportunities to try some new initiatives. Terrill is starting his second year of leading RCS, and his cabinet of district administrators is staying the same this year, so there won't be a 45 percent turnover in leadership as there was before last school year. Superintendent Todd Terrill said Indiana gives each school district an allocation per child to use for advertising. The money for the ads came from the district's advertising budget.

RCS is trying creative marketing ideas, such as the movie ads and roadside billboards, to persuade families that RCS is the best choice for their children. Richmond Community Schools has been running ads before every movie this summer at AMC Showplace Richmond 11 to show why children should enroll in the district. Families went to theaters to watch "Finding Dory" this summer and might have found a school for their child at the same time.
